Privacy
This site is run by the campaign for Tara McDougall, candidate for Rossland City Council. It collects as little as it can, and this page says what it does with what it has.
What we collect
Your email address, if you sign up for updates. Nothing is sent to it until you open the email we send first and click the link in it. If you never click, your address sits in the database unconfirmed and you hear nothing further.
What you write to us through the contact form: your name, your email address, your message, and the replies we send back, so the conversation stays in one place.
What you send in an endorsement: your name, your email address, the display name you choose, and the words themselves. The display name and the words appear on the home page if the endorsement is approved; your name and your email address are never published. Nothing goes up until you click the link in the one email we send to that address, and a person reads it first.
Nothing else. There are no accounts, no payments and no advertising profiles, and we do not buy or sell lists.
Cookies and tracking
There is no third-party tracking. No advertising pixels, no social media buttons that report back, and no analytics service reading over our shoulder.
The site does count its own page views, without cookies and without fingerprinting anyone: the page, where the visit came from, a scrambled version of the browser's name, and when. It also records the address the visit came from, and that is on purpose. It is how the campaign tells a person from a scraper, and how "twelve people read this today" becomes a number at all. Addresses are readable only inside the campaign's admin, and they are deleted after sixty days.
The campaign also keeps a short list of its own addresses, each with a name, so that its own visits can be left out of those numbers. That list is the campaign's own addresses only: the candidate's, the team's.
The site sets the session cookies it needs to keep a form working and to submit it safely, and those are not shared with anyone.
What we use it for
- To send campaign updates, and a reminder to vote before October 17.
- To answer you, and to keep the thread of the conversation so nobody is asked the same question twice.
- To stop spam and abuse: we limit how often a form can be sent from one connection, which needs the submitting address for about a minute.
Who else sees it
Almost nobody. Messages and the subscriber list are readable by the campaign team in the admin. Email is delivered for us by Resend, a mailing service, which needs the address in order to deliver the message. We do not sell, rent or share personal information for anyone else's use.
How long we keep it
- Newsletter addresses: until you unsubscribe. The link is in every message, and it works immediately.
- Contact messages: for as long as the campaign needs them. Ask us to delete yours and we will.
- Endorsements: while the campaign runs, unless you ask us to take yours down, which we will.
- Page views: sixty days, addresses and all.
- The campaign's own addresses: kept while the campaign runs, and only ever the campaign's own.
- Form flood counters: about a minute.
Your choices
Leave the list. One click on the unsubscribe link at the bottom of any campaign email. It takes effect immediately.
Take an endorsement down. If your words are on the site and you would rather they were not, write to us and they come down.
Ask what we hold, or ask us to delete it. Write to tara@votetara.ca and we will answer.
